Our second AWiSE general meeting  is on Tuesday, April 1st at noon in BSRB 154. We will be discussing our upcoming event, EmpowHer STEM Day.

EmpowHer STEM Day is a mentoring/outreach program by partnering with the EmpowHer Institute to introduce underprivileged girls to different STEM fields. We are planning a mentoring/outreach program by partnering with the EmpowHer Institute to introduce underprivileged girls to different STEM fields.

For our first EmpowHer STEM Day on May 27th, 2014, we plan to bring 80 middle school girls to UCLA, where they will be involved in hands-on activities run by graduate students from different science programs. The goal of EmpowHer STEM Day is to engage young girls to get excited about science, learn about possible careers in science, and believe that they have the potential to succeed in the sciences.
We are looking for volunteers from all fields of science (especially physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy and engineering), who would be interested in helping organize these hands-on activities! The girls will rotate through all the different stations, so we need graduate students to host short 20 min interactive activities (repeated for 4 different groups of girls during a 1.5 hour session). Some examples of activities that we will be doing with our biology volunteers include a DNA extraction from cheek cells or a brain evolution station where we point out differences between various animal brains. We will have two morning sessions (9 – 10:30 am and 10:30 am – 12 pm) for the hands-on demos followed by lunch and a campus tour.

We will be discussing EmpowHer STEM Day in more detail at our general meeting this Tuesday, April 1st. We hope to see you there! If you’re unable to attend but are interested in volunteering, please send us an email and we will send you more details.
