Please join us  November 19th at 11:30 am at our weekly meeting in BSRB 154 to hear from Wentai Lui, a Distinguished Professor in the Bioengineering Department and Director of the Chan Soon-Shiong Bionic Engineering Center at UCLA. Dr. Lui will share his story of scientific creation, determination, and perseverance in developing the first retinal prosthesis for the blind – which is the culmination of 25 years of research. The Argus II received CE Mark approval in 2011 and FDA approval in Feb 2013. He will address the technical challenges and barriers he has overcome, as well as multiple aspects of device commercialization, including clinical trials, regulatory approval and marketing.

Dr. Liu will also present an overview of biomimetics, which has progressed rapidly in recent years. Biomimetics is an interdisciplinary field that spans from understanding highly complex biological systems, to treating/restoring/repairing lost biological functions such as deafness, blindness, seizure, and paralysis, to building human-machine interface for performance enhancement. Biomimetic systems have the potential to establish viable solutions for the large population of people suffering from neural disorder diseases worldwide, which currently lack clinical treatments.

All are welcome! We look forward to working together to support innovation and entrepreneurship at UCLA.
