Join the Business of Science Center on March 31st, 2015 at our MPHARM 287 seminar in the Biomedical Science Research Library room 154 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. We will have Dr. Anna Wu and Scott Bernstein as our guest speakers. Dr. Wu will share her experiences on how she combined her business and academic careers. Mr. Bernstein will be sharing his experiences on intellectual property law.

Anna Wu, Ph.D.

Anna M. Wu, Ph.D, is a Professor at the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, in the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, in Los Angeles, California. She also holds an appointments as Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Director of the Cancer Molecular Imaging Program in the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA. Dr. Wu leads an active research group at UCLA developing engineered proteins (including antibodies) for targeting and imaging applications in cancer, including the use of SPECT, PET, optical and multimodality approaches. Dr. Wu is currently President of the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS).

In 2007, Dr. Wu co-founded ImaginAb, Inc., a Los Angeles-based startup company which develops engineered antibodies for clinical imaging in cancer and other diseases. Under her leadership as Chief Scientist, the company is developing and commercializing four internal products to address unmet needs in clinical cancer imaging. ImaginAb also has a vibrant collaborative program with over 10 global BioPharma companies, developing companion imaging diagnostics to accelerate therapeutic development.

Dr. Wu has had a longstanding interest in broadening opportunities and fostering leadership for women in science and engineering. She served as the faculty advisor to the UCLA chapter of Graduate Women in Science (2002-2003). In 2012, she was a Founding Member of the Women in Molecular Imaging Sciences Interest Group of the WMIS and continues to serve on its Leadership Committee. This year she has been invited to speak at the PPG West Chapter Women’s Leadership Council meeting, and at the UCLA Graduate Society for Women Engineers Life Lessons Panel. In the local women’s business community, she has been a member of Broads Circle and Women in LAVA (Los Angeles Venture Association). Prior to joining the faculty at UCLA, Dr. Wu was a research scientist and faculty member at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope in Duarte, California. Dr. Wu received her A.B. degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from Yale University in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. She conducted postdoctoral research studies at Yale University and at the University of California, San Francisco.


Scott N. Bernstein

Scott N. Bernstein has more than 20 years of global experience in biotechnology and pharmaceutical intellectual property law. He joined Kite Pharma in January 2015 as Vice President, Intellectual Property Law.

Prior to Kite Pharma, Mr. Bernstein was with Amgen for 15 years as Executive Director & Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property & Litigation. He led multiple legal teams in the oncology area, spearheading Amgen’s intellectual property strategy for their oncology pipeline. He was the Group Leader, Amgen’s Metabolic Diseases legal team, including PROLIA®/XGEVA® (denosumab), and REPATHATM (evolocumab; PCSK9 antibody). He had broad experience in license, collaboration, and M&A deals. He was also responsible for Amgen’s international IP strategy in Europe, Latin America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

Mr. Bernstein spent six years with the IP law firm of Mathews, Collins, Shepherd & Gould, P.A. in Princeton NJ. He received his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from University at Albany, State University of New York, and his J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center, University of New Hampshire School of Law. Mr. Bernstein is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., and is Registered In-House Counsel in California.
